On September 12, 2009 Bill Sparkman a 51 year old teacher and part-time Census worker was found hung from a tree near a Kentucky cemetery with a word carved on his chest and that word was, “fed.” They hung Bill in a secluded part of Daniel Boone National Forest in rural southeast Kentucky. Mr. Sparkman’s body was severely in the state of decay. Bill Sparkman was a Eagle Scout that decided his services would be best served in this area as a Boy Scout Director, in which he later became a substitute teacher. Laurel county had a lot of possibilities for Bill and his future. Henrie Sparkman has ideas regarding her sons passing but she wouldn’t share them with us at this moment. She feels it is best to sit and wait for the FBI to come up with their own conclusion regarding her sons untimely demise. Gilbert Acciardo, a retired Kentucky state trooper who is now the director of an after school program. He stated several times that, “Based on my years in the state police, becareful because people are going to perceive you different than they do elsewhere,” Acciado stated again, “Even though he was the Census Bureau, sometimes people can view someone with any government agency as, “The government.” Mr. Accaido goes on to describe Bill Sparkman as a, “innocent.”
It reminded me of the 50”s and 60’s where they hung blacks , not for doing any wrong just for the color of their skin. Upon my first reading of this article at www.foxnew.com my jaw hit the floor and the first thing that came rushing to my mind is what era are we in? How old are we? Better yet what country is this? Liggett questions huh?
The horrific conception of someone torturing this poor gentleman for trying to make a living, trying to make ends meet, where is this a crime? Barbarians? Savages? Cave Men? Which label are we? Not compassion, Christian. This brings me to tears and utterly nausiation. “Even though he was with the Census Bureau, sometimes people can view someone with any government agency as , “The Government.” Labels, funny how you get a lot of that in school and just as much in the real world. I have surmised, to live as Mr. Sparkman, as much as possible and do what is necessary not that we have any choice in today’s society.
I have always viewed the Kentucky state to be gorgeous and the people who reside there to be as beautiful, but I am afraid my outlook has changed unexpectedly. As stated, the Census Bureau has yet to allow it’s employees to start resuming their jobs from door to door in Clay County pending the invstigation. The quantity of government officials will have grown by leaps and bounds next year to 1.2 million temporary employees to find these hard to find people. Secretary Gary Locke stated, “ We are deeply saddened by the loss of our co-worker, he was a shining example of hard working men and women employed by the Census Bureau.”

Taylor Swift and Kanye West
According to http://theconversation.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/16/taylor-swift-and-americas-future/, on the MTV Video Music Awards there was a little more excitement that what most would have thought happen. Taylor Swift was up against Beyonce for the woman’s music video. And as Twilight’s Taylor Lautner announced that Taylor Swift the winner she was surprised when announced. With that she went to the stage and began to make her acceptance speech when Kanye West got on to the stage and took the microphone away from Taylor and said that Beyonce had the best video. With that announcement made Mr. West went back to his set and stayed the remainder of the show. When Beyonce finally won an award she asked Ms. Swift to come out to the stage and share the spot light. Pink also felt sorry for the way Mr. West treated Ms. Swift. At some point Kanye apologized to Ms. Swift’s mother with a very distraught Taylor Swift in the back.
As I began reading this story I just could not believe a musician would do that to a fellow musician. I continued to read and my respect for Beyonce increased and my respect for Kanye decreased. I felt bad for Taylor Swift and only could image what Taylor was thinking when she saw him coming to the stage. Along with what Beyonce was thinking when Kanye made that statement. I feel that the producers made a big mistake he should have kick out.
My respect for Beyonce increased because she allowed Taylor Swift to come out on to the stage with her to share the spotlight just a little more. Yes, Kanye has the freedom to speak what is on his mind but there are times they are appropriate time to way it. One of them is not taken taking microphone and saying it on world wide networks.
With this going on I had to find out what the other papers were saying. Then finally I look on mtv.com were I found the store and everything that happened during breaks. I found out that during a break he gave the audience the bird and some more things. Then finally returning to his seat, after sometime Pink got up and shook her head discuss. What was going through his mind when he interrupted her? I could only think that Ms. Swift is one of the most strong willed people that has grazed my ears with their music. I think when Kanye’s mother God rest her sole, decided to go over the “Golden Rule,” he must have been playing his music or he just doesn’t care about other people like that. Looking at the many different pictures regarding this matter one caught my eye and that is with Kanye holding a bottle of alcohol, it was bad enough he dishonored a good person, but he being a celebrity bring alcohol to an event that people use him as an example. I would ask what was he thinking but obviously he wasn’t thinking about anyone. It amazes me knowing how this man loved his mother as he did but finds it acceptable to act in the manner he does in front of millions as he did. His actions reflects his mother and that was a slam in my eyes.

Fort Scott corridor findings unveiled
Thursday night, officials and residents of Fort Scott received their first look at the possible future of the entire city of Fort Scott. The new look for Fort Scott will change the whole southern portion of the city, including changing the historical down town area, not to mention 69 Highway itself. This presentation of the possible change in a small south eastern city is a major reconstruction. The most affected will be the intersection of 69 hwy and National. An area of focus is Main Street where the major fire took out several historical buildings and left vacant grass covered lots. Felsburg, Holt and Ullevig project manager Kyle Anderson stated traffic plans were based on lasting until the year 2040. At the moment the engineers don’t have any estimate as to the costs for such a project, but this process has to face a stakeholder review and more comments before the final report in the later part of November.
I have been a resident of Fort Scott, Kansas many times and for many years, the people are kind, and that is the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to stay. I was very excited to read the article of new changes to areas in need of change. As stated in at www.morningsun.net stated so well this is a preliminary recommendation. This change will be for the good if it follows through and that elates me. But you know where there is good there is always bad, such as traffic delays and so on.
We all know that when KDOT starts working on anything they put traffic at a stand still; we all have been in the Orange zone, here or Kansas City. Instead of working on a small portioned area at a time to not affect people’s everyday lives, they block and zone miles of road or dozens of areas that they can’t work on right away. My main thought regarding this article is that I hope they do stop and realize life moves rather fast at times in the small sleepy town of Fort Scott.
As I pull this story to an end, I say to anyone who drives anywhere that has endured the, “Orange Zone,” this is my only complaint to the reconstruction of the town of Fort Scott. If you’re going to do road work as you say, portion off the area that you are actually physically working on, not miles of endless road that half the workers are nowhere near. In further thought, as for the historical down town fire several years ago, destroyed antique buildings that now only grassy lots lie. I say to the engineers let’s keep as much as possible looking like the original Fort Scott; we don’t want to lose our heritage with a modern thought. Finally the corner of National and 69 highway, this has been a dangerous intersection for many years and I have seen many, many accidents in this above mentioned area. With life comes changes, but changes shouldn’t let us forget who made those brick roads and why they are still there.

Patrick Swayze passes at age 57
Dirty Dancing & Ghost are two movies that most everyone knows that Patrick Swayze was the leading man. After a two year battle with Pancreatic Cancer Patrick Swayze lost his battle. As he was going through treatment he continued working on his new drama series, “The Beast.” Patrick Swayze was the subject of a one hour, “Barbara Walters Special”, on http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=8574333. In this interview he stated, “I keep my heart and my soul, my spirit open to miracles. But he won’t chase every open miracle, or pursue any type of experimental treatment that popped up he would be spending too much time chasing staying alive and he wouldn’t be able to live and enjoy what life he had left.” Patrick stated, “I want to live.” Patrick was hospitalized a short time later with pneumonia. “ How do you nurture a positive attitude when all the statistics say you’re a dead man? He asked the NY Times, and so eloquently stated, “You go to work.”
When I heard the loss of such a battle by such a great, deep hearted man as Patrick Swayze my heart sunk, thinking that this great warrior fought a huge battle few have won. Deep in my heart when I first heard the diagnosis I instantly thought if anyone has a chance that one is a fighter he can do it. But the further time went on I started questioning the fight he had left in him.
Patrick Swayze was one of a lost breed, he was a man that exhaled romance, and a man that women saw bring back the concept of a gentleman, a romantic gentleman. You as a woman, could almost see the gentleman in him with just his appearance. The famous, “Ghost,” or the equally famous, “Dirty Dancing,” won the female population with one big sweep. What any woman at that point in time would of given to have been Demi Moore or the small but powerful Jennifer Grey. It was chivalry at its finest!! Mr. Swayze preformed in over 31 movies not mentioning Broadway productions. His undoubtedly unexpected changes in performances, or movie criteria kept his fans constantly wondering what was next? And this is the way he wanted it, “keep them guessing.” My connection to Patrick was more than my childhood crush, but with my family full of victims of cancer, it was personal. You tend to pay more attention and a lot more thoughtful thoughts and always remember a kind word is appreciated but a prayer is always needed.
A superstar by label but by heart he was a normal everyday guy just like you and me. He purchased an extremely large horse ranch in the San Gabriel Mountains, this was his sanctuary. As he stated to the A.P., “One of the reasons I bought my ranch was because I didn’t want to hear the hype.” I honestly feel that the loss of Patrick Swayze is the loss of true Chivalry. Patrick Swayze, 1952-2009; another victim in the war of Cancer, good-bye sir, you and your talent will truly be missed.

When you have cancer: Keeping infections at bay
When you have been diagnosed with cancer your next step is chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and these can bring your immune system down to nothing. This will make it very easy for you to catch any infections, viruses, cold, flu and much more. Fact is, that is the most fatal and common complication cancer patients have. White blood cells are made of bone marrow and usually help fight infection. But a lot of chemotherapy drugs can affect the bone marrow, and radiation lowers the resistance to fight any diseases. Surgeries and invasive procedures usually has issues with germ risks. You put all this together and it makes a plate for disaster. You become prone to illnesses like colds, flu and pneumonia, and infections such as shingles to sexually transmitted diseases. You have to be more alert for signs of infections like, fever, sweating, chills, cough, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes or diarrhea and much more. It is highly advisable to get a flu shot, wash your hands frequently, stay away from large crowds that you see people that are sick, keep an eye on your injuries, make sure all dairy products are pasteurized, and avoid uncooked meat. These common steps to follow was also stated on lifesteps.com to help keep infections at bay especially cancer victims.
My emotions regarding this article that was discovered on koamtv.com haven’t changed nor do I think they will in my life time. When someone states cancer I listen, and read, or listen period, to be able to respond on a paper of how I feel regarding this really helps on bad days.
In the year 2005 both my parents were diagnosed with cancer, dad was diagnosed in February and mom was diagnosed in November. Reading this article reminds me of things I can’t forget, nor that I am alone in this battle. Washing your hands is common sense for anyone whether they have cancer or not, people need to follow that advice more often than not.
I lost mom only five months after her being diagnosed with Multiple Lymphoma, the fight was short but horrible for a 58 year young woman. She was a strong person and taught me a lot over the years, but she taught me more in the last five months of her short lived life. To care, family comes before all else, and to never, never lose faith. Mom stated the night we were told her diagnosis that I above anyone that she knows has enough faith and strength if she was to make it, it will be with me helping her. My strength weekend and my faith for a period was in the same state. Over a period of time, I realized God wanted mom and so she went home and awaits for dad patiently. My father is still with me, and his cancer was in remission until this year. It has decided to cause him more pain and myself pain as well. I am dad’s care taker and was mom’s for the period I had her. Dad has multiple myeloma, bone cancer, when we found out about his cancer, most every bone in his body was broke. The doctor wouldn’t tell me at the time until about a year ago, that he didn’t expect dad to live but a few weeks. He actually informed me that he was surprised we lost mom before we lost dad and that he was really shocked that I wasn’t an orphan yet. I informed the doctor that the good Lord has a plan for dad and I am grateful each day that he hasn’t found whatever it is. As for dad and I? Well when we decided to have him become part of our family, dad and I made a pact that we live day by day and nothing else. This decision was the best way I could repay him for all he has done for me over the years, besides I made mommy a promise minutes before she left me, that I would never ever leave dad and he would not go through anything alone, he will never go to a old folks home, nor will he be alone period that it was ok to go to heaven and that someday I only hope to be able to be there with her.

Walruses congregate on Alaska shore as ice melts
Thousands of walruses are gather on Alaska’s northwest coast, this is a sign that the Arctic sea ice environment has been changed. Chad Jay, a U.S. Geological Survey walrus researcher, said Wednesday that about 3500 walruses were near Icy Cape on the Chukchi Sea, this is about 140 miles southwest of Barrow. Walruses cannot swim for an extended period of time, they must rest often between feedings. They can dive up to 630 feet for their food but on the average only dive up to 330 feet. About 6,000 walruses gathered on the shore of Alaska in the fall of 2007 which took the scientist by surprise. Jay said, “This is actually all new, they did this in 2007, and it’s a result of the sea ice retreating off the continental shelf.” The Center for Biological Diversity has petitioned to list the Pacific walrus as endangered or threatened because of their habitat is diminishing due to the warming. The USGS researchers plan to head to the Chukchi coast next week to place satellite tags on possibly 30 animals to study in depth their foraging habits. The 2007 herds started the researchers to study the animals habits last year, but partial ice floating apart from the main pack ice kept most the walruses off shore, the reappearing put the research at a full speed ahead.
I don’t feel that my emotion on this story has changed from one point to another, I have always had this deep wondering and concern of our climate, and how the green house affect is going to affect my children and their children.
This article on Fox14 has reassured my fears in the future for my children and grandchildren, I unlike most of my family members do not have the concept of what happens after I am gone isn’t going to affect me because I won’t be here. I care, whether I am here or not isn’t the subject, these are my babies that will have to endure. But I do feel a bit better knowing that action has started to help these animals. Russian biologists stated 3,000 to 4,000 walruses out of 200,000 died from being crushed in stampedes. I keep thinking this is from the climate being affected from people not taking care of mother earth. And I find myself wondering if this is happening to animals what is going to happen when it starts affecting humans, will we wait till it is too late to do anything? I honestly believe that people have lost the concept that we only have one world. They believe that Earth as we know it keeps getting better and better with all the new inventions we have came up with. They only make our lives better, but by sorts have caused more harm then good.
Our ancestors were not ignorant to the right way, believe me I am not saying let’s go back to the horse and buggy, but I am saying let’s pay more attention and conserve, share rides to work, collect cans, when you buy a car get a hybrid, and as for the cell phone, well we all know that there isn’t anyone that can live without one, right? Now think about how long we lived without cell phones until that last several years. We have gotten extremely lazy and our future is paying for it.

Unemployment up again
A abcnews.com story is one of complete recognition to most of the general workforce at this time. American workers continue to lose jobs in August. The silver lining of all this to be that the mass layoffs have slowed down considerably, the economy is nearing a recovery. Since the beginning of the recession a staggering 6.9 million jobs have been lost. As many of the younger generation have to move back in with a family member, the loss of a job can really lower your self esteem. John Fischer a 24 year old who had to move in with his family after losing his job as a ticket sales representative for the Houston Dynamo, a major league soccer team. Mr. Fischer keeps a journal detailing every application mailed, phone call that was made and an email that was sent. For now he feels that it is a diary of nothing but disappointment. “It’s very frustrating, right when I think something is going to fall into place, something happens.”
My response to this article was one of a personal connection. You know? “Been there done that.” I don’t think anyone who has been unemployed before or even recently could not understand the frustration or humiliation that comes with the unemployed life. I think if anyone changed how they thought about the unemployed condition after reading this article needs to reread it or walk the proverbial mile next to the millions of those who are still unemployed. But for argumentative sake,
Being unemployed for well over six months , going to interview after interview, feeling like I had the job time and time again and never a phone call only a letter in the mail stating, “We appreciate your interest in our company, but at this time we have found a more suitable candidate for the above stated position. We will keep your application on file for up to six months for any other open positions.” I don’t know the countless times I swore and was willing to bet anything to my husband, after I was interviewed for a job, man, I have that job in the bag. It never happened someone more qualified or less qualified then I received it. My biggest drawback as I knew time and time again there shouldn’t be a problem with me getting this job, there was the unbelievable statement of , “Your over qualified , sorry.” What? I get the hole over qualified bit, but here is this; I have never had college until last few months. Experience is a lot to play into this and I understand that, but my concept on this whole ordeal is if I am willing to work for you and show you great interest, then am I not an asset to your company knowing the vast knowledge in the areas I am knowledgeable?
In conclusion, the unemployed two hundred six teen thousand people that lost your jobs last month don’t feel alone. There are several of you out there, as the rate jumped from nine point four percent to nine point six percent which was higher than expected. The unemployed issue can be so degrading, frustrating. You live on the hope and prayer that you dressed properly for the interview, if you even get that far, and that the person that is interviewing can see through you and tell what a hard worker you are. I found myself quietly wanting to tell them, “Look you have no idea how bad I need this job, I need groceries I have seven people I need to feed and keep the electricity on. I need this job, Please give me a chance.” Words that never came for the mouth, only in the thoughts.

H1N1 is here!
Winter has began and as I have read the news in several websites including foxnews.com that this flu season is going to be horrific. Recently the death of a 22 year old psychology major at the University of Nebraska has officials stating the cause of death was the H1N1 flu. There seems to be several reports of the Nation’s Universities reporting suspected flu like symptoms with a large majority of the student body. This can hit as close as MSSU or PSU as I hear on fourstates.com that a confermed case of H1N1 has been reported at PSU. As Foxnews.com stated Wake Forest University in North Carolina said there was more than 80 students that have reported flu like symptoms. Also the University of Georgia has a minimum of 23 students with these symptoms, what about Georgia Tech who has reported 100 of its students with these same symptoms. Attendance policies are being modified throughout the Nation’s Universities to accomidate students. They are asking students to see a doctor and stay home if signs of this flu have appeared, “Not to go to school!”
I have spoke to many college students, friends, strangers, and neighbors and even fellow employees. The same statement from each one was, “I am sorry your going to college on line, that is difficult, wouldn’t want to be you.” This was very impressionable on me for some time wondering if my choice of being a non-traditional was the right move for me. As I further read these stories I am very content with being a non-traditional student and staying home. I do believe that you can’t hide and try to avoid this flu there are always going be the Joe Blow how blows his sneeze out in the open and doesn’t cover his mouth. You could be shopping or getting fuel, or as myself working and a fellow employee coughs without consideration of covering their mouth. I am concerned that this will be the next plague, we only hope that the vaccinations will help deter this horrible sickness and save the many lives it is meant to.
The fact the Universities are realizing this is a serious sickness and if their students are sick they need to see a doctor as the officials from PSU stated. You don’t want the students to miss class because education is everything. But life is ultimate, and I am happy to see PSU and others like them have realized this to be true. My eldest daughter attends a Junior College and I always fear these unforeseen issues would interfere with her education, but my top priority is to keep her safe and healthy.
As a parent, a student, and a grandma this epidemic brings the worst fear out in me. We can fight this and win this war. The H1N1 can take everything that means anything to me away, and it can you too. Take the preventive measure; wash your hands, cough in the joint of your arm, and if you feel sick please, please go to the doctor and stay home don’t go to school or work, I don’t want it and neither does anyone else. If you give the excuse you can’t afford to stay home, then ask yourself one question, do you think I want what you have, and if you by chance have the dreadful H1N1 would you be alright knowing all the people you have gotten sick could die, because you couldn’t afford staying home a few days.

Stone Mountain
As of the year 2000 Stone Mountain was populated with 7,651 people. Stone Mountain is a city that was astoundingly given a title on June 27, 2006, the Certified City of Ethics. Once you read my story you will question the Georgia Municipal Association in this decision. Normally I wouldn't label a city from one man’s action, but I found this to be very ironic. A news article located at Cnn.com caught my eye, Roger Stephens a 61 year old gentleman, visiting Wal-Mart at Stone Mountain, a suburb of Atlanta. Mr. Stephens was extremely irritated at the constant cry of a two year old girl, a girl that was a complete stranger to this man. Mr. Stephens informed the mother as the two stood in isle 7 that if she didn’t shut her child up he was going to. And it wasn’t much later he walked over to the child grabbed her and slapped the baby across the face not once, not twice, not three times but yes four times. A fellow shopper stepped in and detained Mr. Stephens until he was arrested Monday and charged September 2nd in court with first-degree cruelty to children.
The assignment is to give our input in regards to our story that we are writing about. So I ventured around looking, searching, until I found the one that screamed at me, something that I could tell you and put me into what I am truly trying say, enjoy. How can any person feel that is proper behavior, can you stop and imagine how the mother felt? Being a mom for over 21 years my temper went rampant, my blood pressure went through the roof, and I kept talking to my husband and kids what I would do to this man. It amazed me that it took a fellow shopper to detain this man, because I can guarantee each and every one of you, there is no person on this earth that would harm my children. And not catch the full blown wrath of an angry mom. They say that there is nothing any worst than the scorn of a woman, that man would get the concept to treat women and children with respect. My mother god rest her soul was as protective as any mother and probably then some, but she said she never seen anyone as overly protective as I was with my children. Mr. Stephens personally needs to be sent to anger management classes and be mad to do community service as a janitor at the nearest elementary school to teach him respect for other human beings, children, women just anyone. Obviously he has some deep seeded mental issues to think that behavior as his was acceptable and that there wouldn’t be some kind of recourse for such ignorance and disrespect for human life, especially a child. I, as anyone in this world and you can deny it, but you know it is the truth we have all endured going shopping especially the holidays when the children are thick running from one place to another making their Christmas list for Santa Claus. You will run into children that are abnaxus and needs to be disciplined. As their parents are concentrating on what to sneak in the cart, they have learned the fine art of selective hearing, we all have done it…come on tell the truth? So you look at mom and dad like would you just stuff a sock in it, so I can think in peace for just one moment. But, to act on this thought is only to be treated with discipline itself. As Mr. Stephens was charged, my opinion is he should of gotten worst.
